By

The Chinese customer base in Australia is booming, and now Zeller is making it even easier for your business to welcome these shoppers by accepting China UnionPay.

From international tourists on holiday to students studying at local universities, Chinese customers form a key segment for many Australian businesses. Zeller now accepts payments via China UnionPay at a simple flat fee of 1.4%, opening your doors to this important market like never before. Ask yourself, could you be missing out on sales by not accepting their preferred card, China UnionPay?

Small businesses thrive when they cater to their customers' needs. By supporting China UnionPay, Zeller enables your business to welcome Chinese customers with a familiar, trusted way to pay, right at your countertop. In this article, we'll explain what China UnionPay is, why the Chinese tourism and student market is so important, and how accepting UnionPay can boost your sales and customer satisfaction.

What is China UnionPay?

China UnionPay, also known simply as UnionPay, is China's main bank card network. Founded in 2002, UnionPay has grown into one of the world's largest payment networks. Virtually every major bank in China issues UnionPay cards, which means most Chinese consumers carry one in their wallet.

A UnionPay card works like any other bank card. Customers can tap, insert, or swipe it to pay, and the transaction is processed through the UnionPay network. UnionPay is accepted in over 180 countries and regions worldwide.

Importantly, UnionPay is the preferred payment method for many Chinese nationals when they travel. While some also use international cards or mobile wallets such as Alipay and WeChat Pay, UnionPay is a card they know and trust. By accepting UnionPay, you remove that friction and show these customers you've got them covered.

Chinese tourists dominate visitor spending in Australia.

According to the ATIC’s International Visitor Survey, in the year ending March 2025, over 860,000 Chinese visitors travelled to Australia (up 26% from last year), spending $9.2 billion (up 28%). Despite being the second-highest source of visitors to Australia (following New Zealand), China still maintained its position as the number one tourism spender in Australia, making up 26% of total tourism spend.

For local businesses, the opportunity is clear. Whether you run a retail store, café, tour company or restaurant, Chinese holidaymakers are a key customer group. Group travel is common, and itineraries are often built around destinations that are familiar, convenient and easy to pay in.

Lunar New Year brings valuable opportunities for businesses.

Each year, international arrivals from China surge over the Lunar New Year period, during which China’s State Council offers an eight-day holiday period. Cities like Sydney now host some of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations in the Asia Pacific. Visitors from China, along with the 1.2 million Chinese-born citizens who call Australia home (2021 census), join the festivities, marking a key trading period for the retail, tourism, and hospitality industries. By accepting China UnionPay in your business, you can incorporate this significant holiday into your yearly strategy.

Chinese students drive significant spending.

Australia is home to nearly 200,000 Chinese international students enrolled in educational institutions. These students contribute billions to the Australian economy through tuition, housing, and daily expenses. From shopping for groceries to eating at restaurants, buying clothes to travelling domestically and everything in between, these students are an ongoing customer base for businesses around the country, not just tourist hotspots.

Both tourists and students often rely on funds from home, using UnionPay cards to access their money. If your business can easily accept their payments, you're far more likely to win their patronage.

Accepting China UnionPay means more sales and happier customers.

Choosing a payment provider that accepts China UnionPay (such as Zeller) can directly boost revenue. Chinese tourists and students actively seek businesses where their preferred payment methods are accepted. Seeing a China UnionPay acceptance logo tells them clearly, "You can pay easily here." Data from UnionPay shows that, on average, Chinese UnionPay cardholders spend significantly more per transaction than other card users because they feel more at ease and aren't worrying about foreign card fees.

Beyond numbers, accepting UnionPay also provides a better customer experience. You're effectively saying, "We welcome you" to Chinese customers, subtly supporting customer satisfaction. Happy customers return and recommend your business to friends – especially important with Chinese customers who often share experiences within their communities and on social media.

More payment options equal more potential sales. Every time you add a new way to pay, you remove another barrier between the customer's desire to buy and the actual sale. With UnionPay alongside Visa, Mastercard, American Express, EFTPOS and others, you're covering all bases.

Why Businesses Should Accept American Express

The more cards your business accepts, the happier your customers will be. Some merchants make the decision not to accept American Express at their business, limiting their customers’ credit payment options to Visa and Mastercard. However, there are many benefits to giving your customers the freedom to pay with their card of choice. These days, AMEX is accepted at tens of thousands of Australian businesses, including post offices, Bunnings, Coles and Woolworths, David Jones and Chemist Warehouse. Your customers are getting used to being able to use AMEX to purchase their essentials, and pick up points along the way. For American Express cardholders, it can be a jarring experience to have their payment method of choice refused — which is just one of the reasons why Zeller offers a low, flat fee of 1.4% for all in-person transactions, including AMEX. Keep reading to learn more about AMEX, and why you’re doing your business a disservice by not accepting this common card type. What is AMEX? American Express — or AMEX, or is it more commonly referred to — is a financial services company similar to Mastercard and Visa. AMEX provides credit through an electronic payment card. In short, an AMEX card is a credit card. AMEX payments account for a smaller share of the total payment pool when compared to other cards. That said, American Express cardholders tend to spend more on each transaction. American Express transactions are 50 per cent larger on average than Visa and Mastercard transactions, and the average annual spend is three times that of other cards. Using an EFTPOS terminal that enables you to offer your customers the option to use their American Express card could give your business’ bottom line a boost. Understanding the credit card network There are two major networks within the credit card industry in Australia: Visa and Mastercard. Outside of those networks are major credit card issuers divided between the three camps. You’ll see the Visa logo on HSBC, ANZ, NAB and Bank of Melbourne cards, while the likes of Commonwealth Bank, Citibank, Coles and Bankwest operate within the Mastercard network. Qantas, David Jones and Velocity are local AMEX credit cards. While AMEX’s chunk of the market share isn’t as sizeable as Visa and Mastercard’s, American Express’ footprint in Australia is certainly growing. More than 100,000 participating businesses have been added to the list in recent years, including AirBnb, Stan, Australia Post, Hoyts, Bunnings, Kmart and BWS. So much so that the question is increasingly changing from which businesses do accept AMEX, to which don’t ? Why is American Express so popular? There’s a reason why many businesses have made the switch to accept American Express in recent years: perks. When a customer uses their AMEX card, they earn, receive and experience more. AMEX cardholders can receive pre-sale ticket access, complimentary hotel stays, free shipping, retail offers and exclusive experiences. Sydney Airport, for example, has an AMEX lounge where cardholders can enjoy complimentary food, beverages, Wi-Fi and luxury comfort before their flight, all for having an American Express credit card. Plus, the more your customers use their AMEX card, the more Membership Rewards points they can earn. These can then be redeemed for travel, gift cards, entertainment, experiences – the list goes on. Another big benefit of paying with American Express is the transaction protection that comes with it. AMEX cardholders are covered for thousands in the instance that purchases are lost, stolen or damaged. It’s the same for travel protection. Those who pay with AMEX can be covered for cancellations, interruptions and delays. It’s easy to see why cardholders reach for their American Express card, and may be disappointed when they cannot use it to make a purchase. Do merchants have to accept American Express? The short answer is no. It’s completely up to you which payment methods you accept at your business. However, the customer’s convenience and preference should always be considered — especially when points earned from payments translate to even more perks for the customer. You could open your business up to a wealth of new repeat customers if you accept American Express, and your competitor next door doesn’t. If you do choose to accept AMEX, don’t forget you can still keep your transaction costs at a minimum by opting for the right EFTPOS terminal. Why isn’t AMEX accepted everywhere? Typically, merchants make the commercial decision to refuse certain cards because of the high transaction fees the business incurs in accepting them. This is one of the reasons why it’s important to partner with a merchant services facility that can give you a competitive transaction rate, with no hidden fees. All card issuers charge a fee to merchants to process payments, but there’s no rule that says this fee has to be the same for every issuer. As a result, many businesses make the choice to accept certain cards based on which incur the lowest transaction fees. Zeller’s low, flat processing fee of 1.4% per tapped, dipped or swiped transactions enables you to give your customers the option to pay with their card of choice and avoid alienating American Express cardholders. How much does it cost to accept AMEX via Zeller Terminal? Taking payments with Zeller Terminal is simple, and so are the transaction fees . Tapped, dipped or swiped payments incur a flat transaction fee of 1.4%. When customers makes a purchase over the phone, that fee is 1.7% — these transactions incur a higher security risk, as the merchant is unable to verify the cardholder’s identity in person. Zeller Terminal is yours to own outright, which means no costly rental fees. There are no hidden charges or ongoing fees, either. What is Integrated EFTPOS?

If you’re shopping around for a payments provider or a point-of-sale system, you may have come across the term ‘integrated EFTPOS’. In this article, we explain what this technology is and how your business can benefit from integrating with Zeller Terminal. Integrated EFTPOS is a direct connection between your point-of-sale (POS) system and your EFTPOS machine. When these two systems are integrated, sales totals that are rung up on the POS are pushed automatically to the  EFTPOS terminal , eliminating the need for staff members to key in the sales value manually on the machine before payment. With the tap of a button on your register, payment details are automatically transferred to your EFTPOS terminal, ready for your customer to tap, dip, or swipe. To explore the best POS systems available in Australia and find one that suits your needs, check out our comprehensive blog article on the topic. Six ways Zeller Integrated EFTPOS will benefit your business. 1. It reduces human error. An unintegrated EFTPOS machine requires a staff member to manually enter the sales total into the terminal before the payment can be processed. Unavoidably, this process will lead to human error. If a customer is accidentally overcharged, not only do you risk losing their business in future, but it takes time away from your staff to process refunds for incorrect payments. Similarly, if a customer is accidentally undercharged, it is unlikely that you will be able to recoup the lost revenue, and it can lead to frustration and confusion when it comes to end-of-day reconciliation. Integrated EFTPOS eliminates these risks, by removing the need for manual entry into the EFTPOS machine. 2. It makes transactions faster. Integrated payments allow you to serve more customers, faster than ever, by removing unnecessary steps in the payment process. Whether you use a touch screen or a barcode scanner, integrated EFTPOS allows data to be pulled directly from your system, reducing waiting times at the checkout. You’ll also save time at the end of the day. Thanks to two-way communication between your devices, end-of-day reconciliation becomes a breeze, with payment transactions relayed back to your POS automatically. 3. It’s free and fast to set up. Although some merchant services providers may charge upwards of $10 per terminal to integrate with your POS system , Zeller’s integrated EFTPOS solution is free. Similarly, the process of getting set up is simple and self-service. Traditionally, integrating EFTPOS and POS systems has required a third party engineer or integration specialist to arrange a time to visit your business premises in person, with Zeller, you can connect your systems remotely, and in most cases, in less than 15 minutes. 4. You won’t lose sales if your POS system fails. In the event of a POS system outage (or other disruption to your POS system), every other integrated EFTPOS solution will lock you out of your EFTPOS terminal – forcing you to contact their customer service centres in order to get back up and running. We understand it’s critically important that, no matter what, you are still able to process sales at your business. If your POS system suffers a disruption for any reason, you can continue to use Zeller Terminal. Simply toggle on ‘Card mode’, and you will be able to continue processing transactions via Zeller Terminal without any downtime. 5. You have over 600 POS platforms to choose from. Whether you’re using a  cloud-based or on-premise POS  solution, with Zeller, you can be confident that – no matter which POS you choose, or industry you operate within – you’ll get the benefit of integrated payments. Zeller is proud to partner with over 600 POS providers, including leading solutions such as  Abacus , Impos ,  Zii ,  H&L ,  Oracle ,  Whoods ,  Redcat ,  Task ,  Hike , plus a long list of others to service a wide range of industries and business sizes. This integrated technology allows Zeller Terminal to function as an extension of your H&L POS, allowing staff members to view open tables, see total outstanding bills, take payments and close tables — all on one device. Rather than the customer paying at the counter or finalising the bill in the traditional, time-consuming manner, waitstaff can deliver the bill and the mobile payment device, all at the same time. By providing powerful real-time data and a searchable transaction history, Zeller equips you with the tools you need to better manage cash flow, identify cost-saving opportunities and sales patterns. With most payment services providers, daily transaction information is unavailable until totals are tallied up at close of business — and important business information can only be found in a monthly merchant services statement. Having the ability to see how your business is performing at a glance enables you to quickly understand your short-term cash flow, progress sales targets to meet (and outperform) business objectives, and ultimately make smarter business decisions. 9. It gets you paid faster with same-day settlements. When you settle your funds into a Zeller Transaction Account, your day’s takings from Zeller Terminal will be deposited into your account the very same night, 365 days a year. Every one of your Zeller Terminals can be controlled from your Zeller account, ensuring consistency across your entire operation. Update your staff permissions, enable and disable surcharging, update the information on your receipts, and more from one easy, online location. 11. It increases your tips. Zeller Terminal makes it easy for customers to leave a tip. This is particularly useful for hospitality businesses — you don’t have to enable the feature, but the functionality is there. You can configure your Zeller Terminal to provide a range of tipping options, either prompting a customer to leave a tip calculated on a percentage of their purchase or allowing them to enter a custom amount. This is a proven tactic, designed to grow tips for your business. 12. It reduces paper with digital and QR code receipts. A recent study* revealed that Australia produces 10.6 billion paper receipts annually, but because of their chemical coating, none of them can be recycled. With consumers and businesses becoming increasingly aware of their environmental footprint, many are choosing digital receipts as a convenient and sustainable alternative. Zeller Terminal embraces this step forward by offering customers the choice to have their receipts sent via email or SMS (available on both terminal models), or they can quickly scan a QR code which appears on-screen after the payment has been processed and download their receipt directly to their smartphone (Zeller Terminal 2 only). *‘Life Journey of an Average Receipt’ report, commissioned by Slyp, undertaken by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
