What is a tab?
Manage customer bar tabs, track pay-later orders, and simplify group billing.
A tab allows customers to keep ordering and settle their bill in a single payment when they are ready.
You can open a tab under a customer’s name, add orders as they come in, and process the final payment upon settlement.
Common ways to use tabs
- Bar tabs: Keep a running total for a group or event throughout the night.
- Regular customers: Log daily coffee or food orders and settle up on a weekly basis.
- Pay-later orders: Manage any situation where a customer wants to place an order immediately and pay at a later time.
How tabs work
- Automated kitchen printing: Every time items are sent to a tab, they automatically print on your kitchen printer and display on your Kitchen Display System (KDS), allowing your staff to start preparing the order straight away.
- Deferred payment: The customer is not charged until the tab is formally settled.
- Multi-device sync: Tabs are shared across all Zeller POS tablets at the same location. Staff can open a tab on one tablet, add items to it on another, and take payment on a third device.
Advanced features
- Customer links and spend limits: You can link a tab directly to a customer profile and set a spend limit. This alerts or stops staff before the total exceeds your chosen threshold. (To learn how to set a spend limit, view our guide here.)
- Enabling tabs: Tabs are turned off by default. (To learn how to turn on tabs, view our guide here.)
