How to set a spend limit on a tab
Set a spend limit so staff are notified when a customer reaches a pre-approved total, or to prevent the tab from exceeding a set limit altogether.
Before you start: Ensure tabs are enabled for your site location. (To learn how to enable tabs, view our guide here.)
Setting or updating a spend limit
You can set a spend limit when first opening a tab or add one to an existing open tab at any time:
- Open the tab on your Zeller POS tablet.
- Tap the three dots (more options icon) at the top of the cart.
- Tap Edit Tab.
- Enter an amount in Spend Limit.
- Choose whether to enable or disable Allow going over the limit.
- Tap Save.
How spend limits work
When 'Allow going over the limit' is ON (Default)
When an item, sale, or service charge takes the tab balance past its limit, staff will see an Over Spend Limit warning displaying the proposed new total.
- Staff can tap Add Anyway to override the limit and add the item.
- Staff can tap Cancel to leave the item off the tab.
When 'Allow going over the limit' is OFF
If an item or service charge would cause the tab to exceed its limit, the system blocks the action automatically. Staff will see a Limit Reached prompt, and the item will not be added to the cart. Tap Got it to dismiss the notification and continue.
- Note: Spend limits count everything added to the tab, including any partial payments that have already been processed.
- Note: If Allow going over the limit is turned off, you cannot set a spend limit lower than the tab's current balance.
Tracking remaining spend balance
- From the Tabs list: Every tab with a configured spend limit displays the remaining balance available underneath its current total.
- In the cart: When you open a tab that has met or exceeded its threshold, a banner message will notify you that the tab is at its spend limit.
