Zeller vs. SumUp

How Zeller stacks up against SumUp.

Complete money management

Accept payments, manage money, track spending and earn interest – all within one powerful business ecosystem.

Faster settlements

With Zeller's nightly, 7 day settlements, you’ll receive your funds up to 4 days faster than with SumUp.

For businesses big and small

Unlike SumUp, Zeller supports third-party POS systems – over 600 of them. Zeller can take you from your first sale to wherever you scale.

Whether you're starting a business, scaling up, or simply reviewing your options, you might be comparing Zeller with SumUp.

Both offer affordable, plug-and-play POS and payment solutions for small Australian businesses. But while they share some similarities, Zeller and SumUp differ in key areas like hardware, settlement speed, and customer support. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide which one suits your needs best.

In-person payments

Both Zeller and SumUp provide affordable EFTPOS solutions, but Zeller offers more powerful, standalone hardware with greater flexibility and built-in features. While SumUp’s entry-level Air reader requires a paired smartphone to function, Zeller’s terminals are all-in-one devices with built-in POS software, optional SIM connectivity, and advanced functions like split payments, digital receipts, tipping, surcharging, and Pay at Table.

Zeller’s three in-person payment options include Zeller Terminal 1 ($99), Zeller Terminal 2 ($199), and Tap to Pay on Zeller App (free) – all with a flat 1.4% transaction fee and no ongoing costs.

In comparison, SumUp offers the Air reader ($49), which must be used with a smartphone, and the standalone SumUp Go ($239), which has fewer built-in POS features. Importantly, Zeller also integrates with 600+ POS systems, giving your business far more flexibility as it grows. SumUp, on the other hand, is a closed ecosystem, with no third-party POS integrations available.

Online payments

Zeller and SumUp both offer tools for accepting online payments, but their pricing structures differ. For domestic cards, Zeller charges 1.7% +25c per paid online invoices or payment link transaction, with no monthly fees. Zeller also offers a virtual terminal for keyed card payments at almost the same rate (1.75% +25c).

In contrast, SumUp charges a flat 2.1% for online payments via links or invoices, and doesn’t currently offer a virtual terminal in Australia. Both platforms let you create and send unlimited invoices for free, but Zeller's lower transaction fees and added flexibility make it more cost-effective for frequent online payments.

Business accounts

With SumUp, funds are settled into your existing bank account within 1-3 business days, as the platform doesn’t offer a built-in business account or debit card in Australia.

Zeller is much faster, with nightly settlement into a Zeller Business Transaction Account, which is a smarter and more fully-featured alternative to a traditional business bank account. It comes with unlimited free debit cards, plus optional corporate cards to manage staff spending and track expenses in real time. You can also pay your bills (via BPAY or bank transfer) and grow your balance with a high-interest Zeller Savings Account, which allows you to withdraw your funds anytime, offering a flexible way to build your savings.

If you prefer to use your existing bank, Zeller gives you that flexibility too, with guaranteed next-business day settlement to a third-party bank account. That’s a lot more reliable than SumUp’s comparatively vague 1-3 business day window.

Zeller App

Zeller App goes far beyond basic payment processing – it's a complete business tool. Alongside facilitating in-person payments (via Tap to Pay) and online payments (through Zeller Invoices and payment links), it includes a full POS mode (Zeller POS Lite) and provides access to smart business transaction accounts with multi-card management. Just like with Zeller Dashboard, you can send and track invoices, reconcile expenses, move funds instantly, and access real-time reporting and analytics – all from one app. While SumUp’s app covers the essentials, Zeller’s broader feature set makes it better suited to businesses that want more. It replaces multiple tools with a single platform built for running, tracking and growing your business from anywhere.

Customer support

Zeller offers 24/7 customer support via phone, email and SMS, with a locally based team available to help at any time – including weekends and public holidays. This makes it well suited to businesses that operate outside regular hours or need fast, on-the-ground support. In contrast, SumUp’s support in Australia is available by phone and email during standard business hours only (Monday to Friday, 9am–6pm AEST). While both providers offer online help centres, Zeller’s round-the-clock support and direct local presence is a big advantage for businesses that value responsive, always-on assistance.

I’ve used a few different machines but nothing comes close to Zeller. It's up to date with modern technology, and data supplied to me through the machine. Definitely the best decision I have made!

Michael, SA

Zeller is a game changer. Online access to all transactions, but also the ability to chuck in a SIM card — no more hot-spotting!

Karl, VIC

We tried a small card reader from [a competitor] first, and had so many dramas. Zeller is perfect. It works like a dream!

Malcolm, QLD

Great terminals and great customer service compared with other comparative POS service providers.

Lois, NSW

Zeller works well and is very easy to use. I've used both Zeller and [a competitor], and Zeller is better — hands down.
