What is authorised push payment (APP) fraud?
Authorised push payment (APP) fraud occurs when a person or business is tricked into sending money to a fraudster’s bank account.
The payment is made willingly, but under false information or pressure.
Common APP fraud scenarios
-
A fraudster pretends to be a supplier and requests payment to a new bank account
-
Someone impersonates a director or senior manager and asks for an urgent transfer
-
A fake “bank” contact claims your account is at risk and instructs you to move funds
Why APP fraud is dangerous
-
Payments are often sent instantly
-
Fraudsters move funds quickly between accounts
-
Recovery is not guaranteed once money has left your account
How to protect your business
-
Be cautious of urgent or unusual payment requests
-
Always verify bank detail changes independently
-
Never rush payments under pressure
-
Train staff to pause and check before sending funds
