Most point-of-sale systems come with a monthly subscription, a software licence, or additional fees to access certain features, costing UK businesses thousands of pounds a year just to run their till. Zeller POS is built on a different premise: that the software powering your sales shouldn’t be eating into them.

Zeller POS is a free cloud-based point-of-sale app that runs on iPad and Android tablets, designed for cafés, coffee shops, pubs, restaurants, and retailers that need a serious POS without the serious price tag. Read on to learn everything that’s included with Zeller POS, and how to get started.

A fast, intuitive selling experience

The Zeller POS homescreen is designed for speed. A category sidebar and searchable product grid let staff find items instantly by name, category, SKU, or barcode. So even during a busy lunch rush or Friday night service, the queue keeps moving. A persistent basket sits alongside the product view, so orders can be built and reviewed without switching screens. The app adapts to both landscape and portrait tablet orientations, so it works however your counter is set up.

Flexible pricing and discounts

Zeller POS gives you precise control over pricing at the register, without needing to go back into your catalogue every time something changes.

Variable Item Pricing is ideal for products where the price changes with every serve (deli meats, cheeses, bulk goods sold by weight, or services priced on the day). Staff enter the price at the point of sale before the item is added to the order.

Item Price Override lets authorised staff adjust a stored catalogue price directly within a sale (for markdowns, clearance, or pricing discrepancies). A PIN is required to make any change, and every override is logged automatically for audit purposes.

Discounts can be applied at the individual item level or across the entire basket, so whether you're honouring a deal on one product or applying a reduction to a whole order, it's handled in a couple of taps.

Notes for the kitchen and the customer

Staff can attach notes to individual items or to an entire order, which is useful for passing dietary requirements or preparation instructions through to the kitchen, or for documenting the reason behind a price adjustment.

Each note can be kept internal (visible to staff only) or set as customer-facing, in which case it appears on the receipt. Notes are visible across the Zeller ecosystem, including Zeller Terminal, the Zeller App, and Zeller Dashboard.

Cash drawer and printer integration

Receipt and kitchen docket printing is supported for any LAN-connected ESC-P compliant printer on the same network. Printing can be set to trigger automatically at the point of sale or manually on demand, with separate configurations for customer receipts, kitchen dockets, and order slips. Reprints are available for open and recently closed orders.

Cash drawer support works via your connected printer over RJ12, with no direct connection to the tablet required. Auto-open on cash sales and refunds can be toggled on or off, and if a drawer fails to open mid-transaction, an on-screen prompt directs staff to open it manually without affecting the completed sale.

Refunds without the admin

Full refunds can be processed directly from the sales record in Zeller POS, covering both card and cash transactions. Every refund is logged against the original transaction with the amount, method, and timestamp, so your records stay clean without any manual reconciliation.

Staff access that works for everyone

Zeller POS uses a two-mode access model that keeps things simple for staff without compromising manager-level control. Managers log in with their Zeller credentials and access the full settings and configuration in Manager Mode. When they step away from the till, they switch to General Access, a simplified view that lets other staff take orders and process payments, without exposing anything they shouldn't be touching. The mode carries over across app restarts and device reboots, so there's no risk of losing a manager session overnight. General Access can also require a Site PIN before a sale can begin, for environments where an extra layer of security is needed.

Zeller POS setup

What does Zeller POS cost?

Zeller POS is free to download and free to run. There is no monthly subscription, no software licence fee, and no lock-in contract. You will simply need to pay for the hardware (if you don’t already have it) and one low transaction fee of 1.3% (for domestic Visa and Mastercard payments).

To run Zeller POS, you'll need to pair it with a Zeller Terminal, and you might need some other hardware depending on the needs of your business. Here's what to budget for:

  • Zeller Terminal — required to accept card payments, available for a one-time purchase price of £99 for Zeller Terminal 1x or £149 for Zeller Terminal 2. You can purchase these online from the Zeller Shop.

  • iPad or Android tablet — Zeller POS runs on any modern iPad or Android tablet; if you already own one, there's nothing extra to buy

  • Receipt printer — optional, but recommended for venues that need to print customer receipts or kitchen dockets. Zeller POS supports any LAN-connected ESC-P compliant printer, including popular models like the Star Micronics TSP143III and Epson TM-m30

  • Cash drawer — optional, connects to your receipt printer via cable with no direct connection to the tablet required

For a typical café or retail setup, your upfront costs are a Zeller Terminal, a tablet, and a receipt printer — all one-time purchases you own outright. After that, you're paying only when you take a payment. Nothing else.

Switching from another POS? It's easier than you think.

Getting started with Zeller POS doesn't mean rebuilding your item library from scratch. Simply export your existing catalogue from your current provider as a CSV file and import it directly into your Zeller Account. Your products, variants, and pricing carry across automatically, with no manual data entry.

You’ll also be guided through the set up process, from signing in, to selecting your business entity, naming your device, assigning it to a site, configuring VAT, tipping, and receipts, and pairing your Zeller Terminal. It's a simple, intuitive process that’s been designed for business owners, not POS technicians. Once you’re all set up, you’ll be ready to start trading.

Part of a bigger financial picture

Zeller POS isn't just a till. It's part of a broader business financial platform that brings your payments, banking, and point-of-sale together in one place. Sales, refunds, and item-level notes sync in real time across Zeller Terminal, the Zeller App, and Zeller Dashboard. So, whether you're behind the counter or checking in remotely, your data is always up to date and in one place.

Beyond the POS, Zeller also gives you access to real-time sales analytics, online invoicing, business accounts, and instant corporate debit cards for staff, with spending limits and controls managed directly from the app. For business owners who are tired of juggling multiple logins across multiple providers, it's all here under one roof.
